Professeur émérite à l'Université McGill, mes recherches sont variées, mais portent surtout sur la géochimie aquatique, et particulièrement en eau de mer. Compte tenu de la complexité des systèmes aquatiques naturels, mes travaux en océanographie m’amènent la plupart du temps à collaborer avec des chercheurs de diverses disciplines : physique, biologie, géologie, tant au niveau local que national et international. Mes étudiants et moi naviguons les eaux du Saint-Laurent depuis près de 35 ans et celles de l’Arctique canadien depuis 2003. Mes intérêts de recherche sont : l’équilibre et réactivité des phases minérales en milieux aquatiques naturels, particulièrement les minéraux carbonatés (thermodynamique et cinétique chimique); l'acidification et déoxygenation des océans et des zones côtières; la diagénèse précoce des sédiments estuariens, côtiers, et océaniques; et le comportement géochimique des éléments traces en eau douce et eau salée.
